How to Report Child Sexual Abuse

Reports of suspected child abuse or neglect should be made to the Department of Health and Human Services, Children’s Protective Services (CPS) by calling 1-855-444-3911 or filing a report online. You may also call your local law enforcement agency and in an emergency, dial 9-1-1.

Before You Call

If possible, gather the following information prior to contacting Children’s Protective Services:

  •  WHO — the suspected perpetrator

  •  WHAT — a description of the suspected abuse

  •  WHEN — the suspected abuse occurred

  •  WHERE — the suspected abuse happened

After You Call

It is not your responsibility to get all the details nor make a determination of sexual abuse. Your responsibility is to provide the information disclosed by the child to Children’s Protective Services or law enforcement. These professionals will investigate the concerns and make decisions about next steps.

Supporting a Child Who Discloses Abuse to You

If a child discloses information that is suspected to be sexual abuse to you, stay calm, listen to the child, avoid displaying signs of surprise or disapproval.

During the disclosure, do not use leading questions or suggest any information to them. Ask open-ended prompts and questions such as:

  • Tell me more about that.

  • Can you tell me where this happened?

  • Can you tell me anything more about what happened?

  • Have you told anyone else about this?

Always thank the child for their bravery and tell them you believe them.

Who is a Mandated Reporter?

Michigan Child Protection Law (CPL) requires the reporting of child abuse and neglect by certain persons, called mandated reporters, and permits the reporting of child abuse and neglect by all persons. Mandated reporters are an essential part of the child protection system because they have an enhanced capacity, through their expertise and direct contact with children, to identify suspected child abuse and neglect. Examples of mandated reporters include doctors, social workers, teachers, and childcare providers. Click here for a complete list of people who are considered mandated reporters.
